Setup a new domain name to work with web host

If you have just purchased a new domain name name and you want to setup with the web hosting server then this article will tell you how to configure and setup your new domain name to work with your hosting server as also the settings required to be done at your hosting server.

When you purchase a new domain name you will have access to your domain account.Your domain account will have links to setup nameservers and DNS records or DNS Management.

There are two ways by which you can setup your new domain name

Option 1 : Using Name servers

Step 1

Your hosting provider will provide the name servers to be used for the domains you setup to work with your web hosting provider.Name servers are like ns1.somedomain.com,ns2.somedomain.com … These name servers will be available in the new hosting account configuration email that you have received. If not, you may call your hosting provider or raise a support ticket to know the name servers to be used. Once you have known the name servers, you have to enter the two name servers in your domain account control panel.

Step 2

You will have to configure the new domain as a addon domain in your hosting account. For this your hosting account must allow you to create more than one domain(create more than one website).

By default the hosting account is already configured with the domain name you provided at the time of creation of the hosting account. If the domain you are trying to setup is same as the default domain using which your web hosting account is first setup, then you will not need to configure the new domain as a addon domain,in that case step 1 will suffice.

If the new domain is the second domain you are trying to setup at your web host then the new domain must be setup as a addon domain at your web host. For this use the ‘Addon Domains‘ link in your web host control panel and setup the addon domain and its root folder. This must be done after the name server settings have been done at the domain control panel as explained in step 1.

Option 2 : Using DNS A Records

Step 1

A Records translate a host name to IP Address. When your web host has setup a hosting account for you, a IP address is allocated to your hosting account. This may be a shared or a dedicated IP address depending on the type of web hosting purchased by you.The IP Address is usually visible in the hosting account control panel(do not confuse this with the last login from IP Address). The IP address of your web hosting account will also be given in the web hosting account configuration email that you have received from your web host.If you are not sure of the IP address please raise a support ticket to know the IP address of your hosting account.

Once you know the IP address,go to the DNS Management/DNS Records area in your domain account control panel.

Add two new DNS Records,Replace the IP address 192.168.1.10 with the IP Address of your web host

Record Type Host Answer TTL
A * 192.168.1.10 300
A www 192.168.1.10 300

Step 2

Now do the setting up of the addon domain as per the step 2 of Option 1 as per the requirement.

It may take upto 24 hours for the DNS name resolution to be propagated over the internet. If all goes well typing your web address http://yourdomain.com in your browser will take you to your web hosting server.

That is all.
